I'm Dr Melanie Smith

I created Master Journal Article Writing after I realised the writing journal article was THE NUMBER ONE thing academic clients asked for my help with.

We all write journal articles. But let's be honest, we don't really enjoy this genre, even though it is critical to career success. Who wouldn't rather do one more book chapter instead? Right?

Except...all that effort, for minimum reward.

With a few tweaks, you could turn each one into a high quality journal paper, and get maximum reward. But there are so many unspoken rules, so many techniques that are not taught. It can be hit and miss.

So i created this programme to give you everything you need to become a master of this genre. Step by step training materials, but also, live feedback and support from me in the group coaching.

My 7 Step Framework has been refined from my own practice over years - first as an academic and then as a coach - until it delivers everything you need.

I've been coaching academic writers for 6 years...

I'm an EU Law scholar, published author of peer-reviewed papers, chapters, books, and edited collections. I've served as a consultant to the European Parliament, held a tenured Associate Professor position at Cardiff University for over 13 years, and led writing courses for faculty. With 18+ years of experience, I've contributed to research, publishing, program development, and teaching/supervision at all levels at Russell Group Universities in the UK.

I've helped thousands of academic clients to foster a better relationship with their writing, maximizing productivity while minimizing time investment.

I established Academic Coach to provide the skills, mentorship, and coaching I wish I had, utilizing cutting-edge research in writing productivity, neuroscience, and behavioral psychology.

I work with Universities and individuals across different disciplines, from High Arts to Hard Sciences, training and coaching academics across the world inside and outside institutions.

I've been where you are, and know exactly what you need to flourish

Participating in the Writing Sprint Club ensures that my research projects do not sit on a shelf collecting dust during teaching terms. Instead, I know that there will be at least two hours a week when I will make steady progress. Melanie’s expert coaching has also helped me make more concrete goals for each writing session. “Revise Intro” will instead become “Update the precis of chapter 1 in the chapter summary section of the intro.” I also have many post-it notes stuck to the edge of my computer full of words of wisdom from our sessions. For example, “The key to momentum is a mix of easy and hard.” Finally, I appreciate the support and friendly faces of the other participants; we celebrate one another’s successes and help keep one another on task. I’m so grateful for the club!

The writing sprints have been fantastic for making sure that I make time for my research! I find that it’s so easy for teaching and admin work to crowd into my schedule, but the writing sprints ensure that I devote quality time to my research. I love hearing Melanie’s feedback during the sprint and it’s also great knowing that at the same time other people are doing their work. Overall the sprints have been really helpful!

Writing Sprint Club has helped keep the wheels in motion on more than one of my projects, even during term time. It provides support, encouragement, mini-coaching, and a collegiate environment in which wins can be celebrated, and challenges and obstacles are discussed (with suggested solutions). Highly recommended!
